GEMATRIA

What is biblical gematria?

Hebrew and Greek have no separate symbols for numbers, so every letter also stands for a number. In Hebrew, Alef (א) is 1, Bet (ב) is 2, and so on up to Tav (ת) at 400. Adding up a word's letters gives its gematria value. Greek works the same way, a system called isopsephy. Jewish and Christian scholars have studied these values for centuries.

HOW IT WORKS

How to use the calculator

  1. Type any Bible word in English, or paste Hebrew or Greek, or enter a Strong's number such as H4899.

  2. See the original word, its meaning and how the King James Version translates it.

  3. Watch its letters add up to its number, with the value of every letter shown.

EXAMPLES

Famous examples of gematria in the Bible

888

Jesus (Ἰησοῦς) in Greek equals 888. E. W. Bullinger noted that Jesus, Christ (1480) and Lord (800) are all multiples of 8, the number of resurrection.

358

Messiah (מָשִׁיחַ) equals 358, the same value as serpent (נָחָשׁ).

2701

Genesis 1:1 in Hebrew adds up to 2701.

3627

John 1:1 in Greek adds up to 3627.
