What is my Hebrew name?

Every name carries a meaning. This free tool traces each part of your name, your first and middle names and the last names of your mother and father, back to where it came from and what it means. Then it offers Hebrew names that carry the same meaning or a similar sound, so you can choose the one that speaks to you, and see your full name in Hebrew and ancient Paleo-Hebrew, with its gematria.

How Hebrew names are given

A Hebrew name is chosen, not translated. Traditionally a name is chosen for its meaning, for a person in the Bible whose life you want to follow, for a similar sound, or to honor someone you love. The full name adds ben (son of) or bat (daughter of) and the father's Hebrew name. Believers from the nations are often called son or daughter of Abraham and Sarah, because "if ye be Christ's, then are ye Abraham's seed" (Galatians 3:29).

Your new name

God has always renamed His people: Abram became Abraham, Sarai became Sarah, Jacob became Israel, and Simon became Peter. Revelation 2:17 promises a white stone with a new name "which no man knoweth saving he that receiveth it." Only God gives that name. This tool gives you the meanings your names already carry, so you can bring them to Him.

Questions

Do I have to change my name?

No. Your name is yours, and it keeps its meaning. Most names don't come from Hebrew, so they have no exact Hebrew form. The tool shows you what your name means and Hebrew names that carry that same meaning. Choosing one is optional: a name you can carry alongside your own.

How do I find my Hebrew name?

Enter your first name, and if you like your middle name and the last names of your mother and father. For each one the tool shows where the name comes from and what it means, then offers Hebrew names with the same meaning or a similar sound. You choose the one that speaks to you, and the tool shows how all your names come together.

Is this the new name from Revelation 2:17?

No. Scripture says the new name is written on a white stone, and that no one knows it "saving he that receiveth it." Only God gives that name. This tool gives you the meanings and the Scripture so you can bring them to God in prayer and seek Him for confirmation.

Why do you ask for my mother's and father's last names?

Your family names carry meanings too, and they are part of who you are. In Jewish custom a person is called by their father's name in formal settings, and by their mother's name when others pray for them, especially for healing.

What if my name doesn't come from Hebrew?

Most names don't, and that's fine. The traditional way to receive a Hebrew name is to choose one with the same meaning, a similar sound, or in honor of someone you love. The tool always tells you why a name was offered.

What do ben and bat mean?

Ben means "son of" and bat means "daughter of." A traditional Hebrew name is your name followed by ben or bat and your father's name.

What is gematria?

Every Hebrew letter is also a number. Gematria adds up the letters of a word. The tool uses the standard method (Mispar Hechrachi), the same one used in our Biblical Gematria tool.

Where do the meanings come from?

Hebrew names and words come from Strong's Concordance and the King James Bible. The meanings of English and other names come from Wiktionary and standard name dictionaries. Hebrew names that are not in the Bible are shown with the Hebrew word they come from.

Is it free?

Yes, completely. You see your names in Hebrew right away. Enter your email to unlock the full view of your name: every letter with its ancient picture, your names in Scripture, how they come together, your numbers, the names God speaks over His children and your name scroll.
