Did the Nephilim Survive the Flood? The Giants After Noah and the Questions About Antarctica

The short answer: Yes. Scripture says plainly that the Nephilim were on the earth before the flood "and also after that" (Genesis 6:4). Giant clans appear again in Canaan, in Bashan and in the Philistine cities, all the way to David's day. How they returned is debated. Where their influence is today is the more urgent question, and Yeshua told us what to watch for: the end will look like the days of Noah.

Genesis 6 is history, not poetry

In this episode Pastor Chris and Josh walk through one of the most avoided chapters in the Bible. Genesis 6:2 says the sons of God, bene ha'elohim, saw that the daughters of men were beautiful and took wives from among them. Elsewhere in the Hebrew Bible that phrase refers to heavenly beings (Job 1:6; 38:7).

Their offspring were the Nephilim, a word commonly connected to the Hebrew naphal, "to fall." These were not simply tall men. Scripture and the Book of Enoch describe a corrupt, violent line that filled the earth with bloodshed, and the flood came in the middle of that corruption (Genesis 6:11–13).

What the Book of Enoch adds

1 Enoch 6 records that two hundred Watchers descended on the summit of Mount Hermon in the days of Jared and bound themselves together with an oath. Their leaders are named, including Shemihazah and Azazel.

1 Enoch 8 lists what they taught: metalworking and weapons, cosmetics and adornment, sorcery and enchantments, and the reading of signs in the heavens. 1 Enoch 69:12 even describes one of them teaching how to strike the embryo in the womb.

Enoch is not in the Protestant canon, but it was read widely in the Second Temple period, fragments were found among the Dead Sea Scrolls, and Jude quotes it directly in the New Testament (Jude 14–15). It is worth reading with care, measured against Scripture.

The giants after the flood

The two words that change everything in Genesis 6:4 are "and after." The Nephilim did not end with the flood. Scripture traces them forward:

  • Numbers 13:33 — the spies report seeing the Nephilim in Canaan, the sons of Anak, and say they looked like grasshoppers beside them.

  • Deuteronomy 2:10–11, 20–21 — the Emim, Anakim and Zamzummim are all counted among the Rephaim, the giant clans.

  • Deuteronomy 3:11 — Og, king of Bashan, is the last of the Rephaim, and his iron bed measures about nine cubits.

  • Joshua 11:21–22 — Joshua cuts off the Anakim from the hill country, and they survive only in Gaza, Gath and Ashdod.

  • 1 Samuel 17 and 2 Samuel 21:15–22 — Goliath of Gath and his relatives, descendants of the giant, fall to David and his men.

How did they come back?

Pastor Chris and Josh disagreed on this, and that is fine. Scripture does not tell us directly. The two most common explanations are:

  1. The bloodline survived the flood through the wife of one of Noah's sons.

  2. Rebel angels crossed the boundary again after the flood and produced a new generation.

Both views have problems to work through. Jude 6 and 2 Peter 2:4 say the angels who sinned in Noah's day are kept in chains, which raises the question of who would have done it a second time. What matters is that the text is clear they returned, and God dealt with them again.

Why God commanded the conquest

Skeptics often point to Deuteronomy 2 and 3 to say God ordered the destruction of whole peoples. Read in context, the conquest of Canaan was aimed squarely at the territories the giant clans held. Pastor Chris frames it as spiritual warfare, a land being cleared of a corrupted line so the promised Messiah could come through Israel. The war that began in Genesis 3:15, between the seed of the serpent and the seed of the woman, runs straight through the conquest of Canaan.

Where do their spirits go?

One of the most important points in the episode is what happens when a Nephilim dies. A human spirit returns to God who gave it (Ecclesiastes 12:7). But the Nephilim were not God's design.

1 Enoch 15:8–12 says that the spirits which came out of the giants became evil spirits on the earth, roaming, causing affliction and rising up against the sons of men. That is why Pastor Chris teaches that much of what the church calls demons are the disembodied spirits of the Nephilim, still looking for a body to inhabit.

As in the days of Noah

Yeshua said, "As the days of Noah were, so will be the coming of the Son of Man" (Matthew 24:37). Pastor Chris and Josh argue that the comparison is not only about general wickedness. The days of Noah were marked by forbidden knowledge, corrupted flesh and beings crossing boundaries God had set.

They see the same pattern rising again in the push to alter the human template through gene editing, merging man and machine, and building systems that would replace the image of God with something made by human hands. Revelation 13:15 warns that the world will one day be told to bow to an image that speaks.

The questions about Antarctica

The second half of the episode turns to Antarctica, and it is worth being clear about what is known and what is not.

What is known: under the Antarctic Treaty of 1959, the continent is set aside for peaceful and scientific purposes, and a 1991 environmental protocol bans mineral mining. It is the only continent governed that way.

What is not known: what, if anything, lies beneath the ice. The hosts raise the question of whether remote and restricted places, including Antarctica, could be connected to the prison the Bible describes for the rebels. Jude 6 speaks of angels kept in everlasting chains under darkness, 2 Peter 2:4 of the rebels cast down to Tartarus, and Isaiah 24:21–22 of the host of heaven gathered as prisoners in a pit and shut up in prison.

Scripture does not name a location on a map, so treat these as questions to weigh, not conclusions to repeat. What we can say with confidence is what Yeshua said: nothing is hidden that will not be revealed (Luke 8:17).

Do not be afraid

Pastor Chris closes with a word for anyone hearing this for the first time. These things are real, but the believer does not live in fear. A thousand may fall at your side and ten thousand at your right hand, and it will not come near you (Psalm 91:7). God has not given us a spirit of fear (2 Timothy 1:7).

This podcast isn't to scare you. It's to prepare you. The spirit of the Nephilim is here, but the Lion of Judah roars louder.

The first world was judged by water. The present heavens and earth are reserved for fire (2 Peter 3:6–7). Yeshua came the first time on a donkey in peace. He is coming again on a white horse (Revelation 19:11), and every grave that belongs to Him will open at His word.

Frequently asked questions

Does the Bible say the Nephilim survived the flood?

Genesis 6:4 says the Nephilim were on the earth in those days "and also after that." Numbers 13:33 then identifies the sons of Anak in Canaan as Nephilim.

Was Goliath a Nephilim?

Goliath came from Gath, one of the cities where Joshua 11:22 says the Anakim survived, and 2 Samuel 21:22 groups him with the descendants of the giant (Rapha).

Are demons the spirits of the Nephilim?

1 Enoch 15 teaches that the spirits of the giants became evil spirits on the earth. Pastor Chris holds this view; Scripture itself describes unclean spirits seeking a body to inhabit (Matthew 12:43–45).

Is there anything hidden in Antarctica?

We don't know. The continent is restricted to scientific use by treaty. Scripture speaks of fallen angels kept in chains and darkness, but does not name a place on a map.
