How to Recognize God's Voice: Why the Disciples Didn't Know the Risen Jesus

The short answer: After the resurrection, people who had walked with Yeshua for years did not recognize Him: Mary at the tomb, two disciples on the road to Emmaus, the fishermen at Galilee. Grief, human reasoning and old routines clouded their eyes, and recognition came only when He spoke Mary's name, opened the Scriptures and broke bread, and filled the empty nets. Pastor Chris teaches that we learn to recognize God's voice the same way: through relationship, the Word and a heart trained by the Spirit.

"Their eyes were kept from recognizing Him"

"Yeshua Himself came near, and went with them. But their eyes were kept from recognizing Him" (Luke 24:15–16). Skeptics use these accounts to cast doubt on the resurrection, but Scripture tells us why. The Yeshua they knew had been raised in glory, and "the natural man doesn't receive the things of God's Spirit... because they are spiritually discerned" (1 Corinthians 2:14). They were looking with memory, not revelation. And many of us miss God's move in our own lives because it doesn't look like what we remember.

Mary: blinded by grief, awakened by her name

Mary Magdalene, from whom Yeshua had cast out seven demons, who stood at the cross and came to the tomb before dawn, saw Him and thought He was the gardener (John 20:14–15). Grief warps perception. When your heart is buried in sorrow, it is hard to see the answer standing in front of you. Then He said one word: "Mary." And she answered, "Rabboni!" (20:16). She recognized Him not by sight but by relationship, by the voice that called her name.

"Don't be afraid, for I have redeemed you. I have called you by your name. You are Mine" (Isaiah 43:1). If you are still weeping at the tombs of the past, you may miss what He is doing now. He gives "beauty for ashes" (Isaiah 61:3), but clinging to the ashes hides the beauty.

The Messiah you're crying for might already be standing next to you.

Emmaus: reasoning, then revelation

The two disciples walked about seven miles debating what had happened, with the risen Lord beside them. He did not reveal Himself by showing His face first. "Beginning from Moses and from all the prophets, He explained to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning Himself" (Luke 24:27). Only after the Word was opened, when He broke the bread, "their eyes were opened, and they recognized Him" (24:30–31). Revelation unlocks recognition. God reveals His glory to those who know His story.

Galilee: routine, then abundance

Even after seeing Him risen, the disciples went back to fishing, back to what felt safe. "When day had already come, Yeshua stood on the beach, yet the disciples didn't know that it was Yeshua" (John 21:4). Familiar routine can become a veil. Only after the miraculous catch did John say, "It's the Lord!" (21:7), and Peter dove into the sea. Sometimes He blesses us into recognition, not just to give a miracle, but to call us back to our mission. If you have drifted, don't be condemned. Be convicted, and come back.

Will we recognize Him when He returns?

Mary missed Him through grief, the Emmaus disciples through reasoning, the fishermen through routine. All loved Him; none were yet awakened to His glory. When He returns, He comes not as a lamb but "on the clouds of the sky with power and great glory" (Matthew 24:30). If we don't learn His voice now, in the Word, in prayer and in the secret place, we may not recognize Him in a form we didn't expect.

The deeper question may be whether He recognizes us. "My sheep hear My voice, and I know them" (John 10:27). Pray, fast and forgive. Be honest with yourself, because God sees the heart. Clean the inside of the cup, not just the outside (Matthew 23:25–26). Paul prayed that "the eyes of your hearts" would be enlightened (Ephesians 1:18). The risen Yeshua is calling you by name today.
