Is Melchizedek Jesus? The Eternal Priesthood Older Than Moses
The short answer: Melchizedek was the king of Salem and "priest of God Most High" who brought bread and wine to Abraham and received a tenth from him (Genesis 14:18–20). Hebrews says he has no recorded genealogy, beginning or end, and was "made like the Son of God" (Hebrews 7:3). Whether he was a pre-incarnate appearance of Messiah or a divinely appointed prototype, his priesthood points to Yeshua: an eternal Priest-King, appointed by oath, not by bloodline (Psalm 110:4), who now makes His people a royal priesthood.
The priest who appears out of nowhere
In Genesis 14, after Abraham's victory over the kings, a man appears with no backstory: "Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine. He was priest of God Most High. He blessed him" (Genesis 14:18–19). Abraham gave him a tenth of everything (14:20). Bread and wine, centuries before Passover and the Last Supper, foreshadow the new covenant meal.
His name means "king of righteousness," and Salem means peace, so he is also "king of peace" (Hebrews 7:2). In a book where nearly everyone has a genealogy, Hebrews notes that he is "without father, without mother, without genealogy, having neither beginning of days nor end of life, but made like the Son of God" (Hebrews 7:3). Many interpreters see him as a Christophany, an appearance of the Son before Bethlehem; others see a real priest-king whom God made a perfect prototype. Either way, the pattern points to Yeshua.
And he outranks Abraham: "Without any dispute the lesser is blessed by the greater" (Hebrews 7:7).
Older and higher than Levi
Most of us learned that the priesthood came through Aaron and the tribe of Levi. But Hebrews asks: "If there was perfection through the Levitical priesthood... what further need was there for another priest to arise after the order of Melchizedek?" (Hebrews 7:11). The Levitical system depended on genealogy and human weakness. Yeshua became a priest "not after the law of a fleshly commandment, but after the power of an endless life" (7:16).
That is why Yeshua, from the tribe of Judah, about which "Moses spoke nothing concerning priesthood" (7:14), can be our High Priest. He was appointed by oath, as David wrote centuries after both Melchizedek and Aaron: "Yahweh has sworn, and will not change His mind: 'You are a priest forever in the order of Melchizedek'" (Psalm 110:4). The Levitical order was a tutor for a season; Melchizedek's order is eternal.
Religion says do more. The kingdom says it is finished.
The veil is torn
Only the high priest could go behind the veil, once a year on Yom Kippur. When Yeshua died, "the veil of the temple was torn in two from the top to the bottom" (Matthew 27:51). We now enter "by the blood of Yeshua, by the way which He dedicated for us, a new and living way, through the veil, that is to say, His flesh" (Hebrews 10:19–20).
No Levitical priest ever sat down, because the work was never finished. But Yeshua, "when He had offered one sacrifice for sins forever, sat down on the right hand of God" (Hebrews 10:12). Because He lives forever, "He holds His priesthood unchangeably" (7:24) and always lives to intercede for us (7:25). He is the Lamb, the veil, the High Priest and the risen King, all in one.
A royal priesthood today
The order of Melchizedek did not end with Yeshua; it began with Him. "He made us to be a Kingdom, priests to His God and Father" (Revelation 1:6). "You are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God's own possession" (1 Peter 2:9). Not priests with robes and incense, but believers who walk in purity, pray with authority, enter the holy place daily and carry His presence to the nations.
Psalm 110, the same psalm that names Melchizedek, says, "Your people offer themselves willingly in the day of Your power" (110:3). "The people who know their God will be strong and take action" (Daniel 11:32). And the destiny is clear: "Blessed and holy is he who has part in the first resurrection... they will be priests of God and of Messiah, and will reign with Him one thousand years" (Revelation 20:6).
Frequently asked questions
Who was Melchizedek?
The king of Salem and priest of God Most High who blessed Abraham and received his tithe (Genesis 14:18–20).
Is Melchizedek Jesus?
Many see him as a pre-incarnate appearance of the Son; others as a type. Hebrews 7:3 says he was "made like the Son of God."
What is the order of Melchizedek?
An eternal priesthood appointed by God's oath rather than by descent, fulfilled in Yeshua (Psalm 110:4; Hebrews 7:16–17).
How can Jesus be a priest if He was from Judah?
Because His priesthood is not Levitical but after the order of Melchizedek, based on an indestructible life (Hebrews 7:14–16).
