Walking in the Spirit: Works of the Flesh vs. the Fruit of the Spirit

The short answer: Walking in the Spirit is not a technique or behavior management. It is surrender: living under the leading of the Ruach HaKodesh so that His fruit grows in you instead of the works of the flesh (Galatians 5:16–25). "As many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are children of God" (Romans 8:14). The Spirit does not flow through performance. He flows through people who have yielded their will, crucified the flesh and learned to obey His voice.

Not a technique, a relationship

Many believers treat walking in the Spirit like a method: something to do rather than Someone to yield to. The result is people trying to manufacture prophetic words, work up healings or speak what they never heard in the secret place. "Walk by the Spirit, and you won't fulfill the lust of the flesh" (Galatians 5:16). Notice Romans 8:14 doesn't say those who know doctrine or work miracles are God's children, but those who are led. You don't lead the Spirit; you follow Him.

This was the original design. In Eden, God walked in the garden "in the cool of the day" (Genesis 3:8); the Hebrew is l'ruach hayom, literally "at the wind (ruach) of the day." Adam walked in the breath of God. After the fall, humanity began living by intellect, effort and survival. Too often we have replaced walking in the Spirit with walking in our own works.

Flesh or fruit

Paul lists the works of the flesh: sexual immorality, idolatry, sorcery, hatred, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, divisions, envy, drunkenness and the like (Galatians 5:19–21). Then the contrast: "The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faith, gentleness, and self-control" (5:22–23). Fruit is never forced. It grows where the root is healthy. If you feel dry and powerless, it may not be a gifting problem but a connection problem. The Spirit flows through crucified ones: "Those who belong to Messiah have crucified the flesh with its passions and lusts" (5:24).

You weren't created to perform the Spirit. You were created to carry Him.

From striving to surrender

The first step is not doing more but surrendering more. "The wind blows where it wants to... so is everyone who is born of the Spirit" (John 3:8). You cannot walk in the Spirit and hold on to control at the same time. "My thoughts are not your thoughts, and your ways are not My ways" (Isaiah 55:8). The battle starts in the mind: when a fleshly thought comes, don't entertain it. Take it captive before it takes root.

Many want visitation, an occasional encounter. The Spirit wants habitation, full residence. Moses prayed, "If Your presence doesn't go with me, don't carry us up from here" (Exodus 33:15). He wanted the Presence more than the promise.

How to know it's really the Spirit

Not every whisper is holy. "Beloved, don't believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God" (1 John 4:1). The Spirit will never contradict the Word, so the deeper you go in Scripture, the clearer His voice becomes. The Word is your anchor and the Spirit is your wind: Word without Spirit dries up, Spirit without Word blows up, but with both you grow up.

  • Exercise your senses: maturity comes to those "who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern good and evil" (Hebrews 5:14).

  • Obey the last thing He told you: "Be doers of the word, and not only hearers, deluding your own selves" (James 1:22). Obedience increases clarity; disobedience increases confusion.

  • Stay consistent: consistency increases intimacy, moving you from guessing to knowing.

Spirit, soul and body in order

Before surrender, the body leads and the spirit trails behind. When we yield to God, the order changes: the spirit leads, the soul follows in obedience, and the body comes along. "If the Spirit of Him who raised up Yeshua from the dead dwells in you, He who raised up Messiah from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit" (Romans 8:11). That includes caring for the body as His temple, and letting Him heal inner wounds: "He heals the broken in heart, and binds up their wounds" (Psalm 147:3). Many try to walk in the gifts while limping in the soul.

Yeshua promised, "He who believes in Me... from within him will flow rivers of living water" (John 7:38). Pray it simply: Holy Spirit, I yield. I say yes to Your leadership, Your voice and Your power. Purify me, govern me and heal me. For more on hearing Him, see our teaching on the seven Spirits of God.
